Artist's Comments

This is the fountain at the Spanish Plaza in New Orleans' Business/Warehouse District. I've called this "Renewal" since the fountain is on some kind of timer. About every minute, the central spray changes its output level. I spent more a few minutes just perched on my spot waiting for the spray to renew its efforts so that I could renew mine.

This was a fairly difficult shot for me to take. I was standing in very bright sunlight, so even the eye-finder LCD was hard to see. On top of that, getting the while balance right was a pain in the ass. I'm very pleased with the quality of the shot that resulted those efforts, though I'm not entirely satisfied with the composition. I think I may have instead wanted to set up on the other side of the plaza. Ah well, c'est la vie.

I think it's gorgeous--so refreshing, just to look at. I love water, and this has so much energy in it. :)

Very nice.

I still don't think this shot is compositionally boring at all. (not like you said earlier. =P)

wow - what a MASSIVE waterfountain... phew...
do kids go in it in the summer?

I just don't like how there are buildings on either side, but then there's just nothing behind the main spray of the fountain. It seems inconsistent to me, like an unexpected barren spot...

I don't imagine so. It's not quite that big. I wouldn't really know, though. I don't actually live in New Orleans; this was my first visit.

The way I see it, you're using the buildings to frame the fountain, and to me, framing's been the toughest aspect of composition (yet the one I enjoy the most.)

If you're referring to traditional composition rules (rule of 3rds + subject off-center), then yes...it'd be compositionally dull. But Like I said...it doesn't appear that way to me. I rather like the shot. :)

That is a very nice fountain, we have some dicky ones around here nothing like that. This would have also been nice if you upped the shutter speed and caught all the droplets of water. It would have been nice if there was something behind the fountain between the two buildings, but you can't help that, I like the frame on this really nice.

1/1024" is the fastest shutter speed my digital can manage. I did play around with those settings, taking a number of shots before getting the settings as best as I could manage. I understand shutter speeds pretty decently, so I did realize that I would want a very fast shutter for this picture. This is the first time I've actually had a camera where the exposure scaling and fstops have actually been pertinent, and I'm slowly learning about how those affect my photos. Long story short, I know I nailed the shutter speed as well as I was able to on this, but I don't know if I could have better optimized the other settings...

That there wasn't anything behind the fountain itself, that's what I'm referring to when I say that I'm not fully satisfied with the composition of the shot. I've got objects on either side, but I keep feeling that void in the center, which, as you say, would probably help establish better contrast as far as the droplets of water go.
